Residential disconnector gully fully choked with solidified kitchen fat. Hydrojet, hot-water flush, pressure-washed the outside work area on completion so the owner was not left looking at effluent splatter.
What the customer called us for
Owner-occupier in Northern NSW. Kitchen draining slow, outside gully showing standing water. Second week in a row the sink had been slow.
What we found when we got there
Classic winter disconnector-gully choke. Fat deposits on the inside of the trap had solidified into a plug. The owner had been running cold water to try to flush it, which had made the problem worse (cold water sets fats harder).
Why we did it this way
On a kitchen disconnector gully you cannot leave fat in the trap — it will absolutely re-solidify as soon as the next cold rinse hits it. The right fix is to clear the trap with pressure, then flush with hot water plus surfactant so the newly cleaned pipe is left with a clean film, not a thin layer of fresh fat.
What we did on site
- Hydrojetted the trap and the branch line.
- Filled both kitchen sinks with hot water and dishwashing liquid.
- Pulled both plugs together so the surge of hot soapy water carried the loosened fat all the way through to the main sewer.
- Pressure-washed the paved area around the gully on completion so the site was left clean.
- Walked the owner through the cold-water vs hot-water rinse habit.
The result
Clear kitchen line and a clean paved area. Owner is clear on why cold water had been making it worse.
If you have the same issue
If your outside kitchen gully is showing standing water in winter, do not reach for the cold hose. Switch to hot-water-and-soap rinses for a week and call us for a hydrojet. It is a one-visit fix. Call Matty on 0447 188 394 or request a quote.

Frequently asked
Why does cold water make a fat blockage worse?
Fat is already liquid at normal cooking temperature. The moment it hits cold water in the pipe it solidifies against the pipe wall. Every cold rinse adds another layer.
How often should a disconnector gully be cleaned?
Once a year for a normal household. Every six months if the house cooks a lot of fatty foods, or every three months on a share-house with heavy use.
Does Drain Masters always clean the site after a messy job?
Yes. Pressure-washing the work area is standard. No one wants effluent splatter left on their pavers.
