Stormwater drains perform a vital function, but when they go wrong the situation is not only messy – it can cause a flood right there at your home or premises! Ordinary drain clearing remedies and tools may not work with stormwater drains, so you may need our CCTV technology and other specialised gear and know-how to protect your property and health.

Sewer drain cleaning services are important to keep the sewer system functioning properly and to prevent blockages and backups, which can lead to unpleasant odours, damage to property, and potential health hazards. Our sewer drain cleaning professionals use a variety of tools and techniques to remove debris, grease, and other substances that can block or obstruct sewer drains.

A blocked sink drain isn’t just one of Brisbane’s most common plumbing problems – it’s one that can strike when you least expect it. Leaky drain water and muck can damage your property and even burst your pipes, but at Drain Masters, we have exactly the tools and expertise to make light work of a tricky problem.

When your toilet is blocked, the most important seat in the house is obviously useless and potentially very messy. Backed up or spilled sewage, however, is nothing short of a plumbing emergency due to the health and bacterial hazards. So if the plunger won’t fix it, get professional help straight away to dodge clean-up bills, damage – and perhaps even worse.

If you think your roof and gutters are important, never forget about your downpipes! When they’re clogged up, there’s not only going to be stormwater all over the place – it could get into your ceiling, walls and even damage your property’s foundation. Are your downpipes overdue for an affordable professional clean to keep them flowing freely?

A blocked drain can cause significant inconvenience and potential property damage. Using advanced drain camera inspections, hidden blockages and structural issues within your pipes are quickly identified and addressed. Professional intervention ensures precise diagnosis and effective solutions, preventing costly repairs and maintaining your plumbing system’s health.
Brisbane’s stormwater drainage is a completely separate system to your sewer in most areas. The goal is simple: get rainwater off roofs, driveways, and streets fast, then carry it through grated pits and underground pipes to the nearest creek, gully, or larger Council line. On paper, it works well. In real life (especially in our subtropical “big-downpour” summers), it gets tested hard – and that’s when we see a lot of blocked drains Brisbane homeowners think are “mystery floods”.
The first challenge is Brisbane rain itself. We don’t just get steady showers – we get sudden, heavy storm bursts that dump a heap of water in minutes. That rush pulls everything along with it: leaf litter, bark, sand, grass clippings, even bits of mulch. If your street has kerb inlets and pits that haven’t been clearing properly, or your own property has a grated pit that’s half full of sludge, it doesn’t take much for the whole line to back up and start spilling where it shouldn’t.
The second challenge is what’s sitting above the drains. Brisbane yards cop a constant supply of organic debris – think gum leaves, jacaranda drop, palm fronds, and the fine “dusty” stuff that washes off roofs and driveways. A lot of homes also have older downpipes feeding into stormwater that’s been patched and extended over the years. We regularly find junctions that have sagged, cracked, or partially collapsed, which becomes the perfect trap for silt and leaf build-up. Once there’s a lip inside the pipe, every storm adds another layer until it finally clogs.
And then there’s the ground and the growth. Many Brisbane suburbs have reactive clay soils, and over time that movement can shift stormwater pipes out of grade. Add the aggressive root systems we deal with here (figs, bottlebrush, lilly pilly, gums, bamboo), and you’ve got a recipe for root intrusions that start small and end up like a net across the line. Stormwater doesn’t always “smell” like sewer when it blocks – it often shows up as pooling water, gurgling at pits, downpipes overflowing, or drains that only fail when it really rains.
One Brisbane-specific point that catches people out: responsibility can be mixed. Council owns the street side infrastructure, but the stormwater from your house to the connection point is usually yours. If your yard is flooding, it might look like a “Council problem”, but plenty of the time the choke point is on the private section – especially if you’ve got an older property, a long run to the street, or multiple downpipes feeding into one line.
When we’re called out, we don’t guess. We’ll usually start by checking the pits and inlets, then use high-pressure jetting to clear the line properly (not just poke a hole through it), and if it’s a repeat issue we’ll run a CCTV camera to find the real cause – roots, a crushed section, a belly in the pipe, or a broken junction. That’s the difference between “it’s flowing today” and actually fixing the stormwater problem so it doesn’t come back the next time Brisbane cops a proper storm.

When you have trouble with stormwater drainage, it only gets worse the longer it goes on. Water pooling causes water damage and rising damp around your home. Let’s take a look at how we solved this for one of our clients in Brisbane.
The problem: We were called out to help a Brisbane Northside resident with serious stormwater drainage issues. Water running off a neighbours block was pooling along the side of their house, at the weep holes and through to the house and carpet.
The solution: We excavated the side of the house and laid gravel for extra drainage and levelling. Then installed a strip drain and connected it to the stormwater drain which runs out to the street. Finishing with a layer of river rock, they’ll no longer have water pooling and drainage issues.

In just about all cases, if the drain is located within the bounds of your own property, the onus is on you to maintain and – if necessary – ensure it is flowing and draining all that waste and stormwater properly.
However, there may be some exceptions – such as whether a third party caused the damage to occur. Also, if the blocked drain in question is situated outside of the bounds of your property – a community stormwater drain or the street-situated outlet for your property’s drains – then it is normally your local council or other authorised authority who is responsible for dealing with it.
But rest assured that in just about all cases, including normal household drains, the responsibility to maintain and clear it is yours, and yours alone. And in most cases, you’ll also be the one to benefit in terms of preventing mess, water damage, flooding and health risks.
If you’re in doubt, get in touch with your local drain plumber and they’ll point you in the right direction.
Unfortunately, while your drains are designed to tackle an awful lot of water, waste and even debris, there are also an awful lot of problems that could lead to a devastating blockage.
And there is no professional on earth who is better equipped to list off these most common blocked drain causes than your local plumber. Among the leading causes are all the normal drain suspects like hair and soap from your shower, food scraps, fats and grease from the kitchen sink, and for your outdoor drains debris like twigs, leaves and general silt, dirt and other gunk. All too often, plumbers find unflushable objects and items stuck in drains including toiletries, and then on other occasions it is broken pipes and poor installation that ultimately led to the blockage.
It’s not a good idea to hold off that call to the plumber until a drain is hopelessly blocked – complete with flooding, water damage, spilled waste, damaged property and major health & safety risks. That’s because a blocked drain isn’t just something that needs a plumber’s attention. It’s a plumbing emergency, plain and simple.
Rather, you should be watching out for the signs of a developing blocked drain so that you can avoid all of those much more damaging, unhealthy & expensive outcomes.
