I am very happy with the service Matty carried out. On time, friendly and a thorough investigation. Nothing was forgotten so no time wasted - his van was fully equipped. Previously I had 3 plumbers call out who said the toilet blockage was fixed. It is such a relief to be able to use the toilet again without worrying if things will rise up. Drain Masters pricing is very competitive too. Glad I called you, Matty. Thanks again.

Blocked Toilet FAQs

Wishful thinking is always great, but actually, it’s true that sometimes a misbehaving toilet will mysteriously unblock itself – especially if what is clogging it is completely water soluble. It can also happen in the event of a single object – like a Barbie Doll’s head! – causing trouble and then eventually getting dislodged through pressure and time.

But in the vast majority of cases, a partially blocked toilet – or any drain in any house or building, for that matter – will only progressively get worse. More tree roots accumulate, bigger wads of toilet paper and other gunk add to a smaller wad, and a bigger mess, greater disruption, and heftier repair and clean-up bills are in your future unless you call a plumber.

When your toilet is bubbling, gurgling and otherwise expressing odd rumbling and murmuring behaviour that a toilet obviously shouldn’t do, that’s a sure early sign that a blockage is lurking in your immediate future. Often, the very next thing that will happen is you’ll hit the flush button and your toilet will fill up rather than flush away your waste and – yuck! – potentially even overflow.

The more technical explanation is that negative air pressure is lurking in your drain line, almost certainly triggered by a partial blockage of gunk, toilet paper, tree roots or other debris, waste or plumbing issues. In some cases, it could be a blocked vent pipe/stack that is causing the issue or even a blocked sewer issue, but the safest solution is always a call to your trusted local plumber.

Luckily, because a toilet blockage is normally progressive – meaning it gradually gets worse over time – there are several early signs that trouble is brewing. Reacting to those signs and symptoms as early as possible is the key to preventing disruption to your life, gross and unhealthy messes and clean-up jobs, and much bigger plumbing bills in the near future.

When any of these signs or symptoms rear their head, it’s your toilet and waste system’s way of saying to you ‘Excuse me, trouble is brewing and you should call a plumber asap!’ The most common signs of a soon-to-be hopelessly blocked toilet include:

When there is a potential blockage, your toilet will start to show signs as the blockage begins to develop. These are the first signs to look out for:

  • Toilet water that drains too slowly after a flush
  • Rising water levels in the toilet bowl
  • Strange gurgling/bubbling sounds after a flush
  • That characteristic ‘drain stench‘ that won’t go away.
