Bathroom Drain Blocked? Try These 3 DIY Fixes

Blocked bathroom drain

Have you noticed that your bathroom drains are the most likely to get clogged up? And that when you are faced with a blocked bathroom drain, they can be the most stubbornly difficult to get flowing again?

If you think about it, it’s not really a surprise – because just contemplate the workload your bathroom drains are faced with! As you shower, use the bathroom sink for your daily routines and pull the plug after a bath, all that debris that you give very little thought to is pulled into the drain – which often struggles to cope. It’s soapy, shampoo-ey residue mixed with human hair, skin, dental floss, cotton buds and a whole host of other things, which when all added together can form into a gross cloggy clump. Worse still, these sorts of developing clumps are then worsened by the build-up of mineral deposits that when it’s all added together can create an impermeable and impassable blockage.

But we don’t need to dwell on exactly how these blockages form – the real question is how to remedy a blocked bathroom drain. So before calling in the cavalry and getting your friendly local plumber to bring their specialised drain cleaning tools, is there anything you can do about it?

If you have a:

The answer is yes! There are things you can try before calling on a local drain plumber in Brisbane. So here they are:

1. Start with hot water

You don’t want to damage your pipes by pouring boiling water down there, but you do want it to be *almost* boiling. The reason this can be so effective to unblock bathroom drain plumbing is that soap scum is so often the reason for the problem – and almost boiling water can be enough to soften and dislodge it.

  • Boil the kettle and let it cool for 3 minutes
  • Pour the entire thing down the drain and then repeat.

2. Try some fishing

It’s possible the hot water solution has melted the soap away and all you’ll be left with is balls of hair that might now be ready to simply pluck out of the drain.

  • Can you see a physical blockage with a torch?
  • Use a hook – a re-shaped coat hanger works a treat – to fish it out.

3. Add some baking soda & vinegar

If hot water alone didn’t do the trick, brew up some natural drain cleaning solutions by mixing baking soda and vinegar and see how that goes.

  • Pour an entire cup of baking soda into the drain
  • Wait 3 minutes
  • Follow up with an entire cup of white vinegar
  • Listen to it fizzle & bubble
  • Put the plug in and walk away for 30 minutes
  • Pouring another kettle of *almost* boiling water down the drain.

Is your bathroom drain blocked still? Argh! Before calling the plumber, you could try a hand-held drain snake bought from the hardware store – and don’t forget about the trusty plunger.
