Historical case study from Matty’s archive. A Brisbane house with a blocked sewer and no accessible IO outside. The only way in was through a snap vent inside the house, which took us behind an internal wall to a built-in inspection opening.
What was wrong
Standard blocked sewer, non-standard access. The property had no external inspection opening or boundary trap we could use. The only access route was a snap vent fitted inside the house, with the real IO sitting behind the wall where the plumber had put it during construction.
Why this matters
Working inside a lived-in house is not the same as working outside. The margin for error is zero on mess, and the room to swing a hydrojet reel is a fraction of what you get in a yard. The jet still needs its distance, so the choice of equipment matters: you need a mini reel that fits the space, with enough hose to still reach the blockage.
What we did
- Removed the snap vent to open the IO behind the wall.
- Set up on the mini reel first (60 metres on the mini, another 60 on the main reel for backup).
- Ran the hydrojet in carefully, aware we had very little room and had to protect the finished internal surfaces.
- Cleared the blockage, cleaned up as we went to minimise disruption inside the house.
- Replaced the snap vent, confirmed the line was clear.
Takeaway
If your only access to the sewer is inside the house, you want someone who turns up with the right-sized equipment the first time and knows how to work clean indoors. Not every drainage plumber does; many will try the big outside reel inside and make a mess.
