This is my own place. When I bought it three years ago I rebuilt the backyard: retaining wall, drainage, new stormwater out to the street, sewer, pathway. Same spec I use for customers because I know it holds up.
Why this one is in the archive
Normally I don’t do landscaping or pathway work for customers, we specialise in drainage. On my own property I did the lot, because it was easier than coordinating multiple trades and I wanted to prove to myself that the full-stack drainage spec I use for customers holds up on a block I’d actually live on.
What we did
- Built a new retaining wall at the back of the property.
- Waterproofed the wall from the back face.
- Installed the standard subsoil drainage spec: tunnel core, geofabric, Aggie pipe, 20mm blue metal, drainage sock.
- Sourced free fill (sand) from building sites in the Kingscliff area, standard practice around here.
- Machined the backyard fill in roughly a day.
- Laid a new stormwater system out to the street.
- Redid a section of sewer that was out of spec.
- Pathway around the side of the property, slate stepping stones.
Would I do this for a customer
Not usually. We specialise in drainage. But for the right customer, with reasonable scope and timeline, I would. It is still mostly drainage work, with the pathway and fill as straightforward extensions.
Takeaway
Three years in and the backyard is still dry, the stormwater runs clean to the street, no issues. Same spec as our customer installs, that is deliberate.
