Blocked sewer at a Tweed Heads property. Kitchen waste ran into the outside disconnector gully and winter kitchen fat had solidified in the U-bend trap. Hydrojet cleared the grease out and we gave the owner the weekly hot-water flush routine.

Tweed Heads blocked sewer at the disconnector gully: solidified kitchen fat, winter trap

What the customer called us for

Owner called us out for a blocked sewer at their Tweed Heads home. The kitchen had started draining slow.

What we found when we got there

Kitchen waste ran into the top of the outside disconnector gully. In this style of gully, the kitchen, hand basin, or shower feeds into a mushroom-topped pit outside, and the U-bend sits in that pit. Winter cold had set solidified kitchen fat around the U-bend and choked the flow.

Why we did it this way

Disconnector gullies are the single most predictable winter blockage on an older property. The trap sits outside in the cold. Kitchen fats hit the cold trap, solidify, and slowly build up around the full circumference until the drain blocks. Once it is cleared, the only fix is habit: weekly or fortnightly hot water with dishwashing liquid down the sink to keep the trap lubricated and the fats mobile.

What we did on site

  1. Located the outside disconnector gully.
  2. Hydrojetted the U-bend clear of the solidified kitchen fat.
  3. Flushed the full kitchen line down to the main sewer.
  4. Walked the owner through the weekly hot-water-and-detergent flush routine.
  5. Explained what belongs in the kitchen bin versus down the sink.

The result

Drain cleared on the day. Owner has the maintenance routine written down. Expected to hold through winter if the routine is kept up.

If you have the same issue

If your kitchen drain slows down in winter and there is a mushroom-topped pit outside the kitchen wall, that is a disconnector gully. It is a predictable winter block. Hot water with a splash of dishwashing liquid down the sink once a week is cheaper than a callout. Call Matty on 0447 188 394 or request a quote.

Frequently asked

What is a disconnector gully?

It is a trap on the outside wall of the house that disconnects the kitchen or laundry waste from the main sewer line. It sits in a mushroom-topped pit and has a U-bend in the bottom. The idea is to catch anything bad before it enters the main line.

Why do these block in winter specifically?

The trap sits outside and goes cold. Cold water carrying kitchen fat hits the cold trap and the fats solidify on contact. In summer the ambient temperature keeps the fat mobile. In winter it sets like candle wax.

How often should I do the hot-water flush?

Once a week through winter at a minimum. Fill both sides of the sink with hot water, a splash of dishwashing liquid, and pull both plugs at the same time so the whole trap gets a thermal wash in one surge.
