Short answer: if you have a mature tree within 10m of your sewer line and any of the signs below are showing up, you almost certainly have tree root ingress. We confirm it in 20 minutes with a camera inspection. The sooner you catch it, the smaller the repair bill – roots do not shrink back once they are in the pipe.

I am Matty from Drain Masters Plumbing. We find tree roots in sewer lines on roughly 1 in 3 blocked drain jobs across the Tweed, Northern Rivers, Gold Coast and Brisbane. Here are the signs we tell every homeowner to watch for, and what to do when you spot one.

The 7 signs tree roots are in your sewer line

1. Slow draining fixtures that keep returning

One blocked drain can be a one-off. Three blocked drains in six months is a pattern. Roots grow back through a punched hole in weeks, so if a snake-and-forget job has not held, roots are the likely cause.

2. Gurgling toilets or showers when another fixture drains

When the washing machine or kitchen sink drains and the toilet gurgles – or vice versa – air is being pulled through a partial blockage downstream. Root mass in the main is a classic cause.

3. Sewer smell outside near a boundary trap or inspection shaft

If you catch a whiff of sewage near a boundary trap, overflow relief gully or inspection shaft, it usually means waste is backing up against a partial blockage. We see this all the time in older Tweed and Gold Coast properties with mature camphor laurels, poincianas or fig trees nearby.

4. Wet patches in the yard that never dry out

A soft, boggy patch of lawn that stays wet in dry weather often means sewer is leaking into the soil through a cracked joint – the same joint roots are growing in through. Our Kingscliff stormwater star picket tree root job is a good example.

5. Faster or lusher grass over the sewer line

If a strip of lawn looks noticeably greener than the rest, roots in a leaking sewer are fertilising it. It is a reliable sign – the pipe route is quite literally feeding your lawn.

6. Toilet backs up when the washing machine drains

Big surges of water (washing machine, bath emptying) overwhelm a partially blocked main and push waste up through the toilet or lowest fixture. If this is new behaviour, something has reduced the main’s capacity – roots, a partial collapse or fat build-up.

7. Audible popping or bubbling in the drain

The sound of air escaping through a partial blockage. Not always roots, but worth checking if combined with any of the above.

Why tree roots get in (and why it is almost always earthenware)

Most tree root sewer problems in Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, Banora Point and the older parts of the Gold Coast and Brisbane are in earthenware (vitrified clay) pipes with rubber ring joints or cement collar joints. These were the standard until the 1970s. Here is what happens:

  1. The joint between two pipe sections dries out over decades, cracks or shifts slightly
  2. Water vapour starts to escape through the hairline gap
  3. A nearby tree root grows toward the water source (roots can smell moisture)
  4. Once the root reaches the gap, it threads through, branches out inside the pipe, and fans out downstream
  5. Toilet paper, hair and wipes catch on the root mass and the blockage builds from there

PVC pipes installed from the 1970s onwards are much more root-resistant but not immune – any crack from ground movement or construction damage lets roots in. See our Tweed Heads sewer PVC compressed by mature tree root for an example where a root grew around the outside of the PVC and crushed it from the outside.

Why DIY will not fix root ingress

Pouring copper sulphate or Root-X down the toilet is a temporary measure at best. Root killers only kill the tips of roots inside the pipe – the main root structure outside grows new fibres back in within weeks. We have never seen a chemical treatment permanently solve a root problem. The real fix is one of:

  • Hydrojet clean – clears the current root mass. Buys 1-3 years before regrowth.
  • Pipe repair at the joint – dig and replace the affected section. Permanent for that joint.
  • Pipe reline – no-dig epoxy liner installed through the existing pipe. Seals the joints so roots cannot re-enter. Permanent for the lined section.

How we actually find and prove root ingress

Every tree root diagnosis at Drain Masters follows the same workflow:

  1. CCTV camera down the line to visually confirm roots in the pipe
  2. Radio-frequency locator to mark the exact position above ground (metre marker + spray paint)
  3. Measure root density and photograph the joint
  4. Written report with footage, recommendation (clean / repair / reline) and quote

FAQ

How do I know if tree roots are in my sewer line?

The reliable signs are repeated blocked drains, slow fixtures that return quickly, gurgling toilets, wet patches in the yard, or lusher grass over the pipe route. A CCTV camera inspection confirms it in 20 minutes.

What are the signs of a blocked stormwater drain from tree roots?

Stormwater backing up during moderate rain (not just storms), water pooling in the yard, or audible gurgling at the downpipe. Roots in stormwater are common at the kerb connection and in older concrete lines.

Can tree roots in a sewer line fix themselves?

No. Roots do not shrink or die once established in a pipe. They grow steadily until the pipe is completely blocked or structurally damaged.

How much does it cost to remove tree roots from a sewer line?

Depends on access, line length, whether we also need to CCTV + locate the fault, and whether the pipe is damaged enough to need repair or relining. Call Matty on 0447 188 394 and we will give you a quote before we start.

Should I use Root-X or copper sulphate for tree roots in drains?

They are temporary at best. We have never seen a chemical treatment permanently resolve root ingress. The reliable fixes are hydrojetting (clean), repair (dig), or relining (no-dig seal).

Call Matty on 0447 188 394 for a free on-site CCTV check. We bring the camera, the hydrojet and the locator to every job. Same-day response across Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, Byron, Gold Coast and Brisbane.
